Students at Montessori High School at University Circle compete with schools in the Lake Effect Conference and with other local, similarly sized schools. Participation in a specific sport is student-driven and teams are organized based on interest. Each year, students are able to build teams for basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track and field.

The main goals of the MHS teams are to have fun and to learn and improve as students go. At MHS, athletics is an opportunity for everyone to get involved, and the athletic director encourages students at every level to join in. Both teams are happy to take beginners.

MHS believes athletics is an opportunity for building community through teamwork and healthy competition, and victory is achieved by showing up and trying your hardest. The focus of our sports program is not on winning, but on personal and team development, from work on specific skills to fostering effective team play.

Cross Country

First meet: Friday, September 8th, 4:00 pm

The MHS Cross Country is a co-ed team that competes in approximately four meets each season. Meets are comprised of individual races on open-air courses over natural terrain. Courses are 5 km long. Meets are typically scheduled after school or on the weekends.

First game: Thursday, September 14th, 5:00 pm

The MHS soccer team is a co-ed team that plays approximately five games each season. The team fields 11 players, including the goalie. Games consist of 45 minute periods, and a 15 minute half-time. Games are typically scheduled after school.

Practice Schedule

The cross country and soccer teams practice together roughly two to three times a week. Typically, the teams meet after school on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Practices at MHS will take place either on the Quad or at Wade Oval.

There are no locker rooms on campus. Students can use the bathrooms in Lillard Hall to change into their practice gear and can store equipment in their lockers, which are located in the basement of Lillard.

On Saturdays, the cross country and soccer teams will meet for practice at Shaker Lakes, typically at 9:30 am.
The practice schedule will be adjusted on weeks when soccer games or cross country meets are scheduled. Families will receive practice reminders directly from the athletic director.

Looking ahead

MHS also offers basketball in the winter and Ultimate Frisbee in the spring. For winter athletes and interested students, open gyms will be held throughout the fall. Families can look for reminders with more details in Friday Notes.
